The Generosity Practice
Message Title: All We Have
Speaker: Ryan Ashley
Music Worship: Trent Mullikin
Luke 12:35-48
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
48b From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Stewardship: The active and responsible management of God’s creation for God’s purposes.
3 Components of a Biblical Theology of Stewardship.
1- God owns it all.
The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you
reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.
Leviticus 25:23
To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth
and everything in it.
Deuteronomy 10:14
For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills… the
world is mine, and all that is in it.
Psalm 50:10
2 -We are entrusted by God with resources to do good.
3- God blesses us to give more, not just to have more.
2 Corinthians 9:6-11
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
6 Guidelines from 2 Corinthians
Regular, not sporadic: He writes, “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money.” 11
Proportional: “Each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income.” 12
Sacrificial: “They gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.” 13
Voluntary: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion.” 14
Joyful! “ … for God loves a cheerful giver.” 15
And motivated by apprenticeship to Jesus: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” 16
